Our top 3 projects for beginners crochet

When I first learned crochet, it was literally just a rectangle and I was utterly miserable about it. I couldn't figure out why at the time but thinking about it now, it was because it wasn't great but crucially, all my hard work was entirely useless. That rectangle sat judging me from the chest of drawers for a couple of months until I gave up and undid it all. I couldn't even use it as a coaster as it was really springy harn.

That experience has stuck with me when designing the beginner crochet workshops and now I have 3 aims for the classes: 1) it should be achievable for a beginner in the time available (or at least, a good start made) 2) it should be something useful or recognisable 3) it should be fun! and definitely not judgy.

So here are my 3 favourite workshops to teach beginners (and beyond)

Pumpkins

This may look really complicated and it does involve using a fairly specific stitch to get the ribbed effect however it is completely feasible for a beginner to make a good stab at in the class and teaches some really common core stitches. Plus they absolutely adorable and the perfect Halloween decoration.

Scrunchies

These are particularly great for kids' workshops or parties. They involve a couple of basic techniques and allow learners to get used to the action of putting the yarn over and pulling through without the complication of trying to find the right loop everytime. This is my own simple pattern after finding other versions overly complicated

Granny Squares

Who can resist a good old Granny Square! This is the most complex of the projects in my view, just because of the need to get the pattern right, however once beginners get in the swing of it, they are amazed at the brilliant crochet they can produce. Once you have mastered a granny square, the world is your oyster and you can make bags, tops, cushions and blankets to name a few with the same pattern. It truly is the perfect gateway project.

One final thing to mention is that crochet is really forgiving of mistakes, it usually comes out looking pretty great, so there is no need to be worried that you won't be able to give these projects a good go. We take you through step by step, supporting you all the way.

We take no responsibility for the amount of crochet that will end up filling your home (and your loved one's homes) after picking up a hook with us!
